sadness

SADNESS

Emotion. An unpleasant visceral feeling of sorrow, unhappiness, depression, or gloom.

Usage: Sadness shows a. in bowing postures of the body wall; b. in the cry face and lip-pout; c. in gazing-down; d. in a slumped (i.e., flexed-forward) posture of the shoulders; and e. in the audible sigh.

RESEARCH REPORTS: 1. Signs of sadness include drooping eyelids; flaccid muscles; hanging head; contracted chest; lowered lips, cheeks, and jaw ("all sink downwards from their own weight"); downward-drawn mouth corners; raised inner-ends of the eyebrows (i.e., contraction of "grief muscles"); and remaining motionless and passive (Darwin 1872:176-77). 2. Sadness shows most clearly in the eye area (Ekman, Friesen, and Tomkins 1971).

Evolution. Sadness is a mammalian feeling which stems from a. grief associated with maternal-infant separation, and b. defeat inflicted in fighting.

Anatomy. In acute sadness, muscles of the throat constrict, salivary glands release a viscous fluid, repeated swallowing occurs, the eyes close tightly, and the lacrimal glands release tears. Facial signs include a. frowning eyebrows (corrugator supercilii, occipitofrontalis, and orbicularis oculi muscles contract); b. frowning mouth (depressor anguli oris); c. pouted or compressed lips (orbicularis oris); and d. depression and eversion of the lower lip (depressor labii inferioris)--as the facial features constrict as if to seal-off contact with the outside world.

Neuro-notes. Each of the four cranial nerves for chewing (V); moving the lips, crying, and salivating (VII); and sighing and swallowing (IX and X) originally played a gut-reactive, visceral role (see SPECIAL VISCERAL NERVE) related to the gastrointestinal tract (Goldberg, 1995:35). The sick "gut feeling" we associate with sadness is mediated by the enteric nervous system of the stomach, intestines, and colon.

Antonym: HAPPINESS.

OK. Day 3.

Today we have a ladies' luncheon at noon... but I've had half a cup of bran cereal with milk because my stomach is burning after yesterday's food fiasco. (I actually did end up getting sick after eating all that nasty food)

But I'm not planning on eating anything afternoon, until tomorrow... maybe soup if I think I'm hungry... because I've had enough food!!

I weighed in at 176.6 today, though- no weight gain, which is good. :) It's clear, though, that I haven't been dieting as hard as I could be - I mean, I could lose 2lbs a week or faster.. well, it's been a week and I've lost 1/2 lb.

Off to walk on the treadmill... I had the lovliest dream about bikini shopping last night... Mmm... Not that I'm such a shopping addict... but all the bikinis looked good on me... and I didnt feel bad if I saw a style I liked, but I knew didn't look good on me in real life... And Sarah was also in the dream, bikini shopping with me! GO SARAH! :D

Day 2 of really being on fire!

Got up this morning and hopped on the treadmill... 25min, 235kcal, 1.86mi. Then I grabbed a glass of milk for breakfast, walked Gertie, and ran to bellydancing. But the teacher didn't show! Augh!

Instead, I got to listen to how Emma got married last week - Emma is the daughter of an old friend of the family- she met a guy here this summer and, after a whirlwind romance of 6months, they got married. She had to convert to Islam, though, to be able to marry him here in Jeddah!! What a mess that could be. Everyone knows it's only on paper for her, and they're ok with it. I just don't get how someone could take religion so casually. Hm.

anyway, came home and began baking... nibbled on some Hummus and whole wheat pita bread while I waited for lunch to finish.

So Lunch, all-in-all, was a big one. About 581kcal. And with the breakfast, it's about 667kcal for the day. I'm planning on hopping on the treadmill for another 35-40minutes later, which should make me good to go. Dinner will be a big one, too, so I won't eat till then. 6PM we have to be at the Rec. center for a biiig company dinner - hope to eat sensibly! They usually have lousy (by that, I mean unhealthy) food anyway, and I wear those "proper" clothes which you don't dare eat much because it'll feel too tight and icky... it's a good trick, keeps you focused on the stuff that'll make you feel fuller longer without the uncomfortable feeling of "popping seams"!

So all-in-all:

Intake: 667kcal
Output: 235kcal (later I hopped on treadmill for another 35 min, 2.8mi, 334kcal) So totals 569kcal

Allowance: 333- 533kcal + any I've exercised off

___

EDIT:

So I got to the dinner, and I...just... well, I enjoyed it. I threw the diet out the window, and went with portion control instead of diet control. Of course I started with a big plate of salad, so I wasn't so tempted to eat the other stuff.. but I ate it anyway! haha. Funny. It was great. I probably totalled a cool day's worth of calories in one meal, though. I'm calculating it out now, just for the heckuvit. Feel reallllyy full, but two things comfort me: 1.} I finished eating before 7:30 LOL and 2.} I wont be hungry tomorrow! :P

EDIT again: totals add up to over 2.5k - that is 2,500kcal. How disgusting! wow! I've learned a lot about calories in foods- yes, ladies and gentlemen - it is true. Tiy does not know all about calories. Ickickick. I feel sick.
